What is Scope 1, Scope 2 & Scope 3 emissions?

As per Greenhouse Gas Protocol – A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (Revised Edition) published by World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and World Resources Institute (WRI) Scope 1, 2 & 3 are defined as below:

  • Scope 1 emissions refer to Direct GHG emissions that occur from sources owned or controlled by the company, for example, emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, furnaces, vehicles, etc.

Purchased electricity is defined as electricity that is purchased or otherwise brought into the organizational boundary of the company. Scope 2 emissions physically occur at the facility where electricity is generated

Saarloha works on 3R principle; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Over the years, we have been relentlessly working towards reducing its GHG emissions from its manufacturing facility located in Pune, Maharashtra, India. We have taken several initiatives to reduce our GHG emissions. Some of the initiatives include, continuously improving our energy efficiency, increasing scrap % per MT of steel, electrification of furnaces, increasing usage of environment friendly bio-diesel etc.

How are we reducing our Scope 2 emissions?

We are using electricity produced from 100% renewable energy sources for both Kalyani Ferresta and Kalyani Ferresta Plus green steel products thereby eliminating the Scope 2 emissions.

Why only Scope 1 & Scope 2 emissions are included in the GHG emission intensity calculation of Kalyani Ferresta and Kalyani Ferresta Plus steel products?
